Sustainable jewellery is something that we have tried producing for several years. Both sourcing the materials and the supply chain have damaged the planet. Sustainable jewellery will not only benefit the environment but care for those who farm these materials. A lot of mines will underpay their workers and live in living conditions. That is why there are so many communities that are trying to combat those issues with mine workers.

Over consumption is a common problem with mining as well. Leading to more pollution being pumped into the earth’s atmosphere. Additionally, it is difficult to reduce the CO2 emissions that are produced. Nonetheless, there are a few things that can be done to fix the issues that we face in the industry, especially with mining.

The Issues That We Face With Jewellery Production

There are many stunning jewellery pieces out there that we all wear. Precious and unique gemstones placed on well-polished metals are something that we all admire and only a few can afford. However, we all tend to forget the damage that jewellery has caused to the planet that we live on. There are very few sustainable mines out there so you can’t imagine the CO2 that has been produced behind each piece.

Unsustainable mines don’t just include pollution, it also includes those mines that are unethical. Furthermore, a gemstone or material is rarely tracked, unlike cocoa and coffee beans. However, there are initiatives out there that look to cover these issues such as fairmined and fairtrade gold. The jewellery industry is probably one of the biggest problems for modern-day slavery which is why changes need to be made. The question is, what are the other problems that the jewellery industry has?

Overconsumption

As mentioned previously, one of the biggest problems with the jewellery industry is overconsumption. For example, many timeless pieces can last for decades such as vintage emerald rings. Moreover, costume jewellery is probably one of the biggest problems in the jeweller industry at the moment which is something that can be fixed. At the moment, there are way too many fashion jewellery pieces being created and although they do not cost a lot, they cause a lot of damage.

Over-Complicated Supply Chains

The jewellery industry is something that is probably too complicated. For example, a material may be made in one country and then processed and crafted in another, before being sold in another country. The air miles alone are way too high and it is something that needs to change.

Environmental Concerns

Finally, there are so many environmental concerns in this industry that it is hard to go through all of them. Air pollution, water waste, noise pollution, dangerous materials, waste and greenhouse emissions are the many problems that the jewellery industry is struggling to resolve.

Summary

If the jewellery industry wishes to change its ways then so does the consumer. If you are looking to buy a wedding ring, avoid modern-day pieces and choose something more unique such as an art deco engagement ring. If you like your jewellery, try to avoid fashion jewellery at all costs and appreciate more antique pieces.
